Our next chapter
Welcome to a brand new school year! Our Lady Queen of Peace School celebrates its 75 year anniversary this year. What makes the anniversary extra special for me is that the school now has an enrolment of over 200 students for the first time since 2018, the last year that Year 7 students were part of primary education.
We currently have 221 students enrolled (not including our mid year Reception students). We have not seen an enrolment of over 220 students since 2016. We welcomed 46 children to our beautiful school – that is at least one new child per class. Our school growth is the result of the positive feedback about the school from our community. Together we have changed the story of Our Lady Queen of Peace School. I am thankful for the amazing staff, School Board, Parents and Friends, and families. I also want to acknowledge and thank the students; they are meeting my expectation of being amazing.
A few people have asked, “How big do you want the school to grow?”. There is no magic number in my mind. My focus has and always will be ensuring we provide quality teaching and learning, inconjunction with a loving, caring, and safe environment for our students. When we are no longer able to provide this, then the school has grown too large. As we grow, I am mindful that maintaining these two pillars is my focus.
Live, Learn, Lead
Each year in Term 3, on behalf of Catholic Education South Australia, we conduct the Live, Learn, Lead survey. The survey was developed in 2020 and designed to help schools access the perceptions of staff, students and parents/carers. It focuses on:
- Catholic Identity – Catholic Education
- Curriculum and Co-constructed Learning and Assessment design – Learning Support
- Student Agency, Identity, Learning and Leadership – Enjoyment of School and Autonomy and Independence
- Community Engagement – Welcoming School, Parent-School Partnership and Safe School
- Infrastructure
Comparing the 2023 parent data against the data from 2022, the school has shown significant growth in all the domains. This affirms for me that we are moving in the right direction. The data also supports the construction of the school’s Annual Improvement Plan. This will be uploaded to the school’s web page in the near future.
I will present more on the LLL survey at the Annual General Meeting (AGM). The AGM will occur Tuesday 5 March 2024 (Week 6). All families are welcome to attend. As part of the AGM, there will be a call for new membership to the School Board. If you would like to be part of the School Board, which meets twice a term, please complete a nomination slip – you can self-nominate or you can be nominated. Nomination slips can be collected from the front office, or accessed via a Seesaw message distributed to families on Friday 16 February 2024.
My approach
Though the school’s leadership structure has changed, I am still available to catch up with families, if needed.
2024 Leadership team:
- Lee Abela - Principal
- Marissa Redden - Assistant Principal Religious Identity and Mission
- Adriana Pilla - Assistant Principal Learning, Engagement and Teaching
- Olivia Mammone - Key Teacher: Inclusive Education
- Courtney Elliott - Key Teacher: Data
My approach is that I would rather know than not know, and I can only do things when I have information. Please feel welcome to catch up with me if needed. I have absolutely enjoyed the positive feedback I have received over the last 12 months.
In addition to welcoming our new students to the school, we also welcomed some new staff to the school in 2024:
- Diem Savy – Reception teacher
- Kim Whyte – Year 1 teacher
- Michael Mastrangelo – Year 3/4 teacher
- Andi Benzija – ESO and Occasional Care facilitator
- Ava Falkenberg – ESO
- Tanya Larsson – ESO
Even though it has only been a few weeks, their impact on student learning has been significant. Click on their images that appear in the following gallery.
Take care.

Lent
This week marks the beginning of the season of Lent. Lent is a liturgical season of preparation, as we get ready for Easter. Lent is a time of prayer, fasting and almsgiving, and our classes will spend time reflecting on this over the coming weeks.
We began our week with Shrove Tuesday. It is the day before the followers of the Christian faith observe Lent, the 40-day period before Easter. Thank you to our wonderful P & F volunteers who prepared and served pancakes to the whole school.
The first day of Lent is always Ash Wednesday, in which we place ashes on our forehead in the shape of a cross to remember our own mortality and begin our journey of penance. 5/6SH lead the whole school liturgy where we reflected on Jesus’ life and suffering, and the ways he continually showed compassion to those around him.
Project Compassion and the work of Caritas Australia is an important part of our Lenten journey. The oldest child in each family has been given a small Project Compassion money box, where they can ask family members and friends to make a small contribution. Each dollar raised by our school will help change the lives of the world’s most vulnerable people. Project Compassion boxes can be brought back to school and given to classroom teachers to place inside the larger class boxes.
God, may your light guide our days, and your spirit bring us peace.
Amen.

Welcome!
Hello and welcome to a new school year. I am excited to extend warm greetings as your newly appointed Assistant Principal at Our Lady Queen of Peace School. Having dedicated the past 10 years to the OLQP school community, it is an honour to step into this new role and continue our shared journey towards excellence.
Throughout my time here, I have witnessed the incredible potential within our students and the unwavering commitment of our staff. These experiences have shaped my educational philosophy, emphasising the importance of fostering a supportive learning environment that nurtures both academic and personal growth.
As we embark on this new year, my vision for the school is one of collaboration, innovation, and inclusivity. I am eager to work alongside our dedicated educators, staff, students, and parents to build upon our strengths and address challenges with creativity and resilience. Together we can ensure that OLQP remains a place where each student is empowered to reach their full potential.
In the coming months, I look forward to implementing initiatives that enhance our educational programs, strengthen community engagement, and provide valuable resources for our students. I am open to feedback, ideas, and conversations with all members of our community. Please feel free to contact me at any time.
We look forward to a year of shared accomplishments, continuous learning, and the collective success.

We have started our 2024 Visual Art program with a whole school, collaborative art project: we are creating a large-scale dragon. The inspiration for this project comes from the Lunar New Year, this year being the Year of the Dragon. The Year of the Dragon is believed to embody power, strength, luck, and wisdom.
Students are tracing their hands numerous times and using a variety of media to embellish them. The students will cut out their completed hand artworks and they will become the dragon’s scales. Each class is focusing on different media and colour combinations so that our dragon will be bright and colourful in keeping with this vibrant festival.
Here are a few photos of the students working on their pieces for the dragon. I will share some photos of the completed dragon in next newsletter.

Good Beginnings in 1SW
To begin this year, students in 1SW took part in the Good Beginnings program. Students enjoyed learning about one another through games and Circle Time.
A classroom agreement has been created and members of 1SW helped to make a visual timetable for the learning environment.

Good Beginnings
The Good Beginnings program is over and we now launch into the curriculum full steam ahead. We enjoyed getting to know each other and discovering how we can be part of the team that is 5/6SH.
Our class shared experiences, hopes, and goals for the year ahead and we were particularly inspired with some quotes from a short film: The Boy, the Mole, the Fox, and the Horse. Based on the wonderfully written book by Charlie Mackesy, the short film follows a boy, a mole, a fox, and a horse, as they create a beautiful friendship while travelling together in the boy's search for home. The group continues their journey together, imparting wisdom and learning from each other along the way. Their thoughtful words on life, friendships, challengess, hopes, and above all love, will inspire us as we journey through the year ahead.
After viewing the film, students were asked to choose one character to reflect upon and to also include a favourite quote spoken by the character. There were many special words and it was hard to choose one!
