What a rollercoaster ride Our Lady Queen of Peace School has been on during the last 3 weeks!
Events included:
- celebrating Catholic Education Week, which was linked closely to our Mercy tradition,
- St Columba College staff visiting our school as they heard great things about our approach to reading and spelling,
- National Simultaneous Storytime, where City of Charles Sturt Mayor, Angela Evans, was our guest reader,
- our Year 4 and 5 female students attending the University of Adelaide for their second WISTEMS session,
- NOVA 919 live broadcast from our school,
- the Book Fair,
- Grandparent's / Special person's afternoon,
- RAA Street Smart team presentation to each class,
- Sushi and cold rolls special lunch order day,
- Reconciliation Week,
- Year 5/6 camp at Glenhaven Park, Stockport,
- A whole school liturgy.
All of these events were a wonderful celebration of student learning, engagement, and school representation.
NOVA 919 nailed it on the air, talking about how impressive our school and students are. They were amazed how quickly the students settled after the festivities, sitting and listening attentively during our very brief morning gathering.
We are a part of an amazing school with amazing students.
Communication
Open and transparent communication is something I value highly. Throughout my leadership, I have always stated, “If I don’t know, I can't do anything about it”. I value families feeling welcome and comfortable to make a time to meet with me and discuss any concerns.
Experience has taught me that sometimes parents don’t want to be a bother, don’t want to be "that" parent, or are mindful of how busy I am. Please know that I am never too busy to catch up with families.
In addition to this, it is important that families always approach staff regarding any concerns rather than approaching the children of families. This might seem like a simple solution, however experience has shown that it doesn’t always go well.
Uniform
Our school has a clear uniform policy which was endorsed by our School Board. We have moved to a trans-seasonal uniform, allowing students to be comfortable whilst at school, regardless of the season.
Can you please ensure that your child is in the correct uniform when they come to school? Regardless whether we are at school or out in the community, the school's uniform needs to be worn correctly. If we are out in the community, a student may not be able to attend if they are not wearing correct school uniform.
You can access our Uniform Policy by clicking on the image of the policy or by accessing the link in the "Useful Links" section at the top of this newsletter.
If you have any questions regarding the uniform, please feel welcome to contact your child’s teacher or contact me.
Student free day
We have a student free day on Tuesday 11 June 2024, following the King’s Birthday long weekend. The staff will be engaging in professional learning to ensure we are able to build our capacity and provide the very best teaching and learning for our students.
Please contact Jo Fahey on 0417 840 700 to see if there is still any availability for OSHC services on this day - spaces were VERY LIMITED.
Have a great long weekend and take care.

Principal
Reconciliation Week
On Friday 31 May 2024, class 3/4MM led our whole school liturgy for Reconciliation Week.
As a school, we reflected on this year's theme, ‘Now More Than Ever’, reminding us that the reconciliation process is ongoing and that there is still a way to go to ensure that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples stop facing discrimination.
Through our celebration, we were reminded that God’s dream for humanity is one of justice and equality, of compassion and understanding, of forgiveness and mercy, to be shared by all peoples on earth.
Colossians 3: 12-15
Therefore, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience. Bear with one another and, if anyone has a complaint against another, forgive each other; just as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive.
Above all, clothe yourselves with love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful.

The Mayoral Make -A- Book Literacy Challenge
We are delighted to announce that some of our classes are participating in the prestigious Mayoral Make-A-Book Literacy Challenge! This beloved community program is designed to nurture the talents of budding young authors and illustrators within our school.
About the Challenge:
The Mayoral Make-A-Book Literacy Challenge is a popular book-making competition that runs annually from February to May. It is open to all children who live or study in the City of Charles Sturt council area. Having been a cherished tradition since 1979, this competition provides a fantastic platform for young creatives to showcase their literary and artistic skills.
What the judges look for:
- Original ideas and themes: Creativity and uniqueness are key.
- Creative use of language: Effective and imaginative language, along with sound spelling and grammar, are crucial.
- Story structure: A well balanced beginning, middle, and end.
- Design and layout: An appealing design, layout, and format that enhance the reader's experience.
- Illustrations: Artwork that complements and enhances the text.
- Presentation and neatness: Overall neatness and presentation quality.
This is a fantastic opportunity for our students to express their creativity, develop their writing and illustrating skills, and gain recognition for their efforts. We are incredibly proud of our students who are taking on this exciting challenge and look forward to seeing their imaginative creations.
Let’s cheer on our young authors and illustrators as they embark on this literary adventure!

In RDS, students have explored shape in Mathematics in many different ways.
We love to provide hands-on experiences for students. In one lesson, students traced around two dimensional shapes, manipulating, comparing, and sorting to make their own new creation. The students were able to use their imaginations to create animals, snowmen, planes, motorbikes, suns and so much more!
In another lesson, students were challenged to build the highest and strongest tower with just ten blocks. This helped students to investigate the properties of three dimensional objects where they needed to consider many things, including:
- whether or not to use objects with curved or straight sides;
- balancing the blocks;
- comparing the lengths of sides;
- considering which way the block would stand higher or stronger.

OLQP's 2024 SALA Exhibition
I am excited to share that our school will be participating in the SALA festival again this year.
SALA stands for South Australian Living Artists and is a state-wide showcase and celebration of South Australia’s living visual artists. The festival was established in 1998 to promote and celebrate the many talented visual artists in South Australia.
It culminates in Australia’s largest and most inclusive visual arts festival, which takes place in galleries and non-traditional arts spaces across South Australia annually, during the entire month of August.
Each year, SALA takes the work of around 8,000 emerging, mid-career, and established South Australian artists to more than 500 venues across the state (from sheds, cafés, offices and retail spaces to wineries, schools, public spaces, galleries and major arts institutions) to reach local and inter/national audiences of more than 850,000 people, and many more online.
Our school will be exhibiting again at the Civic Library in Woodville where artworks created by students from each year level will be showcased. Participating in the SALA festival is a wonderful opportunity to share the great artworks our students create with their local community. It also gives students an insight into professional arts practice.
Further details will be shared closer to the event.
In the Art Room…
The Art Room is a hive of activity during art lessons and at lunch time in "Art Club". A few of our latest projects include:
- Mixed media, large scale, colourful fish created by our Reception artists.
- "Delicious" papier mâché ice cream sculptures made by Year 1 artists. You can see a couple of artists working on their ice creams in the photos.
- Beautiful metallic bugs are just beginning to be planned and imagined by our Year 2 artists.
- Fantastical leaf dragons / creatures are being created using autumn leaves and foraged natural materials by Years 3 and 4 artists. In the photo gallery you can see some of their excellent chalk pastel art works inspired by the "Northern lights" aurora borealis).
- The Years 5 and 6 artists have just completed some great landscapes using a variety of watercolour techniques. There are a couple of examples of these in the photo gallery.

Fried green tomatoes
Our Year 1 and 2 students are very excited to share an immersive culinary journey undertaken this term in our STEM Design and Food Technology classes.
Students from 1SW enthusiastically harvested the last ripe green tomatoes from our school gardens before they meticulously washed the produce, learning about the importance of food hygiene and management.
Our Year 2 students and budding young chefs then expertly sliced the tomatoes before coating them in seasoned batter and frying them to golden perfection.
This hands-on experience not only connected our students with nature but also taught them valuable lessons in teamwork, creativity, and the journey from seed to plate. As we continue to explore the realms of Design and Food Technology, we anticipate many more culinary adventures at Our Lady Queen of Peace School. Yum!
