Welcome to Term 4! The year has certainly moved along quickly.
Some people would say, the older you get the faster time passes, but I truly believe the year has gone quickly because we have filled it with so much learning, laughter, and growth. As one achievement or opportunity comes to an end, we celebrate it and then look forward to the next one.
Over the last couple of weeks, I have met with several families who wish to join the OLQP community. The most common question I am asked is centred around learning, and learning opportunities. Families are amazed that we offer five specialist subjects that are taught by five specialist teachers. In addition to this, they are impressed by the fact that we offer many excursions and extra curricula / out of school opportunities such as sporting carnivals, school choir etc.
75 Year Anniversary
During the week beginning 11 November and ending 15 November 2024, we will be celebrating our 75 year anniversary. There will be something on each day and the highlight of the celebration will be on the Friday.
A calendar of the week was recently distributed via Seesaw. Families are welcome to attend as many parts of the week as possible. Formal invitations have been sent to CESA leaders and consultants we have worked with, past principals, priests, and previous chairs of the School Board, and other significant figures. No doubt, there will be other people who could be invited that we are not aware of, and some that may not know that we are celebrating 75 years. If you know someone that should be or would like to come along to our celebrations, please let them know that it is occurring.
I have had the privilege of speaking with past leaders of our school. I am mindful of the strong shoulders that I stand on as current principal and all the work that has occurred before my appointment.
I look forward to seeing you at our celebration!
2025
As previously mentioned, we are moving to a 12 class school. Over the last couple of years, we have added an extra class, but in 2025 we will be adding 2 classes. This model allows the school to:
- cater for our growing numbers;
- ensure that there is enough support and access to staff in each classroom;
- accept additional enrolments throughout the year.
If you know of someone who is considering moving their child to Our Lady Queen of Peace School, can you please encourage them to contact the school as soon as possible. This would allow the school to plan, cater and ensure that we are continuing to provide excellent teaching and learning, in a safe, caring and loving environment.
In preparation of the additional classrooms, we have changed the flooring in the library section of the Discovery Centre, resulting in the reimagining of its layout:
- The Art / STEM area is now located where the library section was;
- The library is now situated in the front corner closest to the canteen;
- The Food Technology room will soon move into the Discovery Centre.
This will allow the school to utilise the current Food Technology room as another classroom.
Moving forward
This term will continue to move quickly. Not only is it filled with learning opportunities, there are also end of year celebrations, special assemblies and masses, as well as Christmas. Please keep your eye out on the communication the school provides and use the term calendar – I would hate for you to miss anything!

Halloween
As our school disco theme is Halloween, I thought I would share some background information regarding the traditions that lie within this celebration and how it does have a connection to the Catholic faith.
Halloween Christian traditions connect to the Christian feast of All Saints’ Day on November 1, also known as “All Hallows" Day.” The word “Halloween” comes from “All Hallows’ Eve,” the evening before this important day. Initially, All Saints' Day honoured martyrs, but it later grew to celebrate all saints. For Catholics, November 1 is a Holy Day of Obligation, a day when attending Mass is encouraged.
Dressing up on October 31 traces back to celtic harvest traditions but became a way to prepare for All Saints' and All Souls' Days. So, letting kids dress up whether as a superhero or a ghost is not against Christian values.
56SH led the school in a liturgy celebrating All Saints' Day where we paused to remember the many good men and women who followed the way of Jesus, who cared for those in need and put others first before themselves, and who lived the true message of the Gospel.
2025 Sacramental program
If your child is in Years 3-6 in 2025 and you would like them to participate in the sacramental program, please contact me via Seesaw so that I can ensure you are kept up to date with information regarding the program.
Remembrance Day
As a school community we will gather on Monday 11 November at 10:45am for our Remembrance Day prayer service. Please feel welcome to join us as we pause and reflect on the sacrifices made by service members during wars, conflicts, and peacekeeping operations.

OLQP hosts WPCC Bingo Night
Last Saturday, 26 October, OLQP had the pleasure of hosting the Woodville Park Childcare Centre’s Bingo Night in Biliyonendi Hall. The event was an enormous success, showcasing our strong partnership with local childcare as well as our shared commitment to enriching children’s experiences.
As gold sponsors, OLQP was proud to support this event, which raised close to $12,000 for their new nature play equipment. This investment will help create an engaging and imaginative playspace for the children a cause close to all our hearts!
We were thrilled to see the wider community come together for such a wonderful cause!
Leaders of Learning Day presentation on Key Capabilities
On Monday 4 November, Courtney Elliott and I will be presenting at the Leaders of Learning Day, where we will be showcasing our ongoing work in engaging with the Key Capabilities and reflect on the role of student-led conferences. Our focus on Key Capabilities has helped equip students with essential skills such as collaboration, problem solving, and self-reflection. This presentation will allow us to share our journey, highlight successful strategies, and gain insights from fellow educators.
Additionally, we will be discussing the impact of student-led conferences in fostering student agency and engagement with their learning. Feedback from participants will be invaluable as we continue to enhance this initiative for meaningful family involvement and student growth. We look forward to exchanging ideas and gathering feedback to further strengthen our approach.
Welcoming the Little Peacemakers to OLQP
Starting school is an exciting milestone for both children and their families, marking the beginning of a new journey filled with learning, friendships and growth. At Our Lady Queen of Peace School, we are thrilled to have welcomed our newest members the Little Peacemakers as they join us every Friday throughout Term 4 to participate in our transition program.
This program, designed to ease children into school life, provides a supportive and nurturing environment where each Little Peacemaker can build confidence, develop essential skills, and become familiar with our routines. During the first five weeks, the children participate in either a morning or afternoon session, engaging in fun, hands-on activities like a bear hunt adventure. For the final three weeks, they will enjoy full day sessions to experience the rhythm of a complete school day.
Facilitated by one of our Early Years educators, Kim Whyte, each visit is an opportunity for the Little Peacemakers to form friendships with future classmates, connect with their teachers, and get to know our school community. We look forward to seeing these young learners grow and shine each week!

Hockey clinics for Years 3-6 students
We are thrilled to announce that our school has the fantastic opportunity to host a series of hockey clinics for our Years 3-6 students over the coming weeks!
Thanks to the Sporting Schools grant we successfully obtained in Term 4, we will be welcoming Hockey SA to our school to provide these engaging and fun filled clinics.
These clinics not only promote physical activity and skill development but also encourage teamwork, confidence, and a love for sports.
We are incredibly grateful to Hockey SA for their partnership in this initiative and to the Sporting Schools program for making it possible.

Our Playgroup Term 4 program is bursting at the seams with fabulous activities for our young early learners!
The Pirate Day was particularly popular, and for good reasons!

Class novel study – Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
This term, our class has been on an exciting journey through "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" by Roald Dahl. Our novel study has captivated students, who are eager to dive into the world of Willy Wonka's factory with each chapter.
Along the way, we have been sharpening our comprehension skills by monitoring our understanding, asking insightful questions, and summarising key events.
Together, we have explored each character's unique traits, discussing what makes them memorable and how they drive the story. This engaging story has provided us with endless opportunities for rich discussions and analysis, making reading both fun and educational!
Olivia Mammone
Year 3/4 teacher
In Reception, we have been engaging in the Made in the Image of God (MITIOG) program.
Through this learning experience, we are developing a sense of awe, wonder and gratitude for all life, appreciating that we are special gifts from God.
Together we discussed different feelings associated with the beauty of life. We hope you enjoy seeing some of the "precious gift" cards that we made!

What a great start to Term 4!
Year 1 students worked hard in all areas of the curriculum. In Science this term, 1SW will be working alongside 1TM exploring "Earth and Space", building their understanding and confidence to describe daily and seasonal changes in our environment.
This includes creating their own weather chart, as well as researching and recording what is happening with the weather over a month.
We look forward to seeing what the students discover and all the conversations along the way.
Kim Whyte
Year 1 teacher
This term we will explore essential grammatical structures and expand our vocabulary, enabling students to express themselves with more clarity and confidence.
The Reception classes are focusing on family vocabulary and cultural traditions. Year 1/2 students are beginning to create sentences with both previously learnt and new vocabulary, focusing mainly on family, descriptive words, and the verb ‘tener’ (to have). Year 5/6 students are being introduced to -ar verbs and their conjugations through lots of speaking activities.
Practice makes perfect! Regularly using new words and grammatical structures in conversation is key to retention and fluency.
Language is a reflection of culture, and exploring Spanish culture can significantly enhance the learning experience. Understanding cultural context enhances the language learning, making it more meaningful and relevant. This term, we will delve into traditions and famous artists / sports people, allowing students to appreciate the diversity within the Spanish-speaking world. This cultural immersion promotes empathy and global awareness, preparing students to be informed and engaged citizens.

Circular Champions competition winners
I am excited to share that our Year 2 students' artworks were entered into a national competition, run by "Aussie of the Month" and Pilot Pens, and won one of twenty $1000 Pilot Pen stationery prize packs. A wonderful achievement given this competition was open to primary schools Australia wide.
The competition involved students working together to develop ways of reusing plastic bottles in innovative and creative ways. The students learnt about the glass artist, Dale Chihuly, and used his work as inspiration to create plastic "chandeliers" and decorative "glass" discs. The large-scale collaborative sculptures are really innovative and beautiful.
Comet the reindeer
Our school was selected to paint one of the reindeer that will be part of the Christmas displays at Westfield West Lakes Shopping Centre. A group of Year 3 and Year 4 students are working on this project. Can you guess which famous Vincent Van Gogh painting we will be using as inspiration to paint our reindeer "Comet"?
Excursion to Dale Chihuly exhibition
The Year 2 students recently visited the work of the world's most celebrated glass artist, Dale Chihuly, at the Adelaide Botanic Garden. Students experienced viewing his vibrant, large-scale sculptures in the beautiful botanical setting. After using his work as inspiration for their own creations, it was a wonderful opportunity for them to see his work firsthand.
The exhibition is on until 29 April 2025 at the Adelaide Botanic Garden, and is free to view during the day and would be a great holiday activity for all ages.
